“Southeast Idaho Mule Deer
Hunting & Elk Hunting”
Southeast Idaho is
known for its trophy
Mule Deer hunting and there’s also great
Elk hunting. Several of
the largest mule deer bucks taken in Idaho have
come from Southeast Idaho. (see
Idaho Records) A few trophy Mule Deer with
nearly 30” or larger racks are still being taken
most years. During the 2006 season a 31” 6x8
non-typical Mule Deer and a 352 gross bull Elk
were taken by Bearpaw Outfitters hunters.
There’s also excellent
Shiras Moose hunting,
Cougar hunting (Mt.
Lion), and exciting Forest Grouse hunting. Local
waters provide great Fishing for cutthroat,
rainbow, brook trout, walleye, and bass. Best of
all, licenses are available over the counter for
most trips.
Location: This
large hunting area is over 50 miles across and
includes much of Franklin, Caribou, Bannock, and
Oneida counties in Fish & Game Units 73, 74, 75,
77, & 78 which are near Bear Lake in southeast
Idaho.
The area is about
halfway between Yellowstone Park in Wyoming and
Salt Lake City, Utah and is one of the most
scenic mountain areas in the west with its
unusual mix of aspen, evergreens, maple, and
juniper trees broken by natural sage openings.
Your outfitter,
Dale Denney has been guiding hunters in SE Idaho
for 10 years. With 30 years of outfitting
experience in several states, Bearpaw Outfitters
have endured the test of time. Dale and his crew
of experienced guides have outfitted hunters
from around the world, of all ages and
backgrounds. Regardless of your age or amount of
hunting experience, Bearpaw Outfitters have a
hunt that’s just right for you.
Mountain Lodge
facilities include cooked meals and lounging in
the common rooms of the lodge, comfortable rooms
with Jacuzzi bathtubs, and it’s only about 20
minutes to the hunting area. Groups of up to 12
can be easily accommodated.
Motel “Town Hunt”:
The motel is near shopping, restaurants, and
other activities, yet within 40 minutes of the
hunting area. Bearpaw Outfitters will provide
your room and will pick you up and return you to
your room each day. Restaurant meals are not
included with the Motel “Town Hunt” so budget
about $30 per day for your meals.
Tent Camps that are
accessible by auto are offered in the mountains
for several species of game. You have a choice
of Full Service Camps with meals included or
Drop Camps where you are on your own.
Horseback Drop Camps
are offered for mule deer and elk hunting. Drop
camps are perfect for small groups of 2 to 6
hunters who want to be on their own. Drop camps
can be reserved for up to 10 days.
The Terrain
depending on camp location may vary from
mountain foothills and rolling mountain basins
to mountain ridges with remote rugged canyons
for hunters who like to hunt those types of
areas. There are good proportions of mixed
forests with plenty of natural openings for
glassing.
Hunting methods
often include spotting and glassing from vantage
points, spot & stalk, watching game trails and
feeding areas, and sitting at waterholes. Horses
are available, but are not used on all hunts.
Physical condition
is important for hiking into the distant or
rugged areas. Bearpaw Outfitters can also
accommodate hunters with physical limitations by
sitting and watching feeding areas, waterholes,
hunting old logging roads, or by using ATV’s or
horses to get hunters into more remote areas.
Guided or Unguided Hunts
are available for most species with various
accommodations included.
Hunting
Licenses: Licenses are sold over the
counter for mule deer, elk, cougar, forest
grouse, and predators, but moose licenses are a
limited draw. Special youth licenses (even
non-residents) cost about $10 to $40.
Hunter Education is
required for all hunters born after Jan 1, 1975.
Hunter Orange is
not required in Idaho, but Bearpaw Outfitters
recommend orange for rifle hunts.
Equipment List:
All hunts do not require all items on the list;
ask about any item you are not sure of.

3 hour drive from Bearpaw Outfitters. Check for
Airline Flights and
Rental Cars.

vary depending on where animals are seen while
scouting in the late summer and where camps are
set. There are numerous options for camps and
you will be notified with specific driving

you may choose to transport your trophy and
