The Outfitters

"Dale & Tara Denney" the owners of Bearpaw Outfitters & Big Sky Trophy Outfitters have been outfitting hunters for over 30 years. Outfitting is not just a part time or sideline business, it's their fulltime, lifetime, family business. Dale & Tara have devoted their lives to outfitting and believe in welcoming all hunters as their friends, which is likely why so many hunters keep returning for many years after their first trip. Bearpaw Outfitters are also one of very few outfitters who are approved and operate by Better Business Bureau membership standards.

Hunt Areas

As you know, no single hunting area has the best hunting for all species of game. For this reason, Dale and Tara have chosen to operate in four areas which were carefully chosen for the quality hunting available in that area. and can offer a wider selection of top quality hunts. Each hunt area was carefully chosen for the quality hunting available in that area.

Southeast Idaho

Idaho is a top trophy big game hunting destination. Southeast Idaho has a long history of producing record class Mule Deer. In fact, several of the largest mule deer ever taken in Idaho were taken in Southeast Idaho.

This SE Idaho area also has excellent bull Elk hunting, Cougar hunting (Mt. Lion hunting), and Shiras Moose hunting. The mountains also provide exciting Forest Grouse hunting and the waters have great Fishing for cutthroat, rainbow, brook trout, walleye, and bass.

Eastern Montana

Montana is known as "Big Sky Country" and you'll know why the first time you go there. Dale & Tara operate as Big Sky Trophy Outfitters offering trophy Mule Deer hunting, Whitetail hunting, Pronghorn Antelope hunting, and Elk hunting on eastern Montana Private Ranch lands.

Big Sky Trophy Outfitters lease thousands of acres of the best private ranch lands for their trophy mule deer hunts, antelope hunts, whitetail hunts, and elk hunts. There's also great Upland Bird hunting and Varmint hunting. Hunters are amazed at the number of animals seen on these hunts and a high percentage book return trips.

Northern Utah

Utah is a top destination for trophy Mule Deer and trophy Elk hunting. Utah also has great Shiras Moose hunting, Cougar hunting, and the Cow Elk hunting is extremely good. The Utah cow elk hunts provide hunters a great opportunity for a budget elk hunt with very high success.

There's also excellent Upland Bird hunting, Waterfowl hunting, and Utah even has Desert Bighorn Sheep hunting. Bearpaw Outfitters also offer Utah Rio Grande Turkey hunts in case you are looking for the wild turkey slam.

Northeast Washington

Washington is a relatively unknown destination to most hunters. Washington hunters have quietly enjoyed some of the finest black Bear hunting, Northwestern Whitetail deer hunting, Merriam’s Turkey hunting and Shiras Moose and small game hunting available anywhere.

There’s also great hunting for Mule Deer, Bighorn Sheep, Elk, Cougar, Varmints, Waterfowl, and Grouse, plus there’s plenty of great Trout Fishing and Walleye Fishing in the streams and lakes.

Northeast Washington is consistently the top producing whitetail, bear, moose, cougar, turkey, and grouse hunting area in the state of Washington. It's great game country and with 30 years of experience guiding hunters here, Bearpaw Outfitters know the secrets of this hunting paradise.

Types of Hunts

Trophy hunts, Combo hunts, Budget Hunts, Meat Hunts, and Group Rates are offered for most species of game hunted.

Guiding

Fully Guided, Semi-Guided, and Unguided hunting options are available for most species.

Idaho Moose Hunting

Moose hunting in Southeast Idaho is extremely good with more moose spotted each hunting day in Idaho than on many Canadian moose hunts or Alaskan moose hunts. This is great moose hunting country and Bearpaw Outfitters have seen well over twenty moose in a single day during past moose hunts. Best of all, success has been 100% on bull moose hunts and cow moose hunts nearly every season.

The reason Bearpaw Outfitters have such high success on their Shiras moose hunts is because they are always watching for moose even while they are hunting for other species. Bearpaw Outfitters are consistently spotting moose throughout the area and as a result they know the best places to moose hunt each season.

Bull moose, Cow Moose, and Combo Moose Hunts for multiple species are offered. You have a choice to stay at the tent camp, the mountain lodge, or the local motel during your hunt. Moose tags are issued through a draw, and Idaho has the best moose drawing odds anywhere in the lower 48 states. Your chance of drawing a moose hunting tag often ranges from 20% to 40%.

Location & Terrain

The hunting area is in F&G Units 73, 74, 75, 77, & 78, an area over 50 miles across. Elevations range from 5,000 to 9,000 feet. There are rugged mountains and canyons and there are also mountain basins and benches with easier terrain. Please advise Bearpaw Outfitters in advance if you have terrain preferences.

Trophy Quality

Most mature bull moose taken have had antlers from 38” to 45” wide and there are some old bulls in this area that are close to 50”. There’s not a high probability of getting a Boone & Crocket bull, but it’s not impossible either. If you're an archery hunter there's a good chance of getting a Pope & Young moose if bow hunting.

Hunting Season
Moose hunting season opens Aug 30 to November 23 for any legal weapon.

Best Time

Moose hunting is usually best for archers during the rut which is late September or early October when it is easiest to call them in close. Rifle hunting is usually best in November after the leaves have fallen and there’s snow on the ground for better visibility while spotting.

Hunting Methods
Depending on what weapon and time of the season that you choose to hunt, methods may include glassing open hillsides and basins, stalking on foot, or sitting watching water holes or feeding areas where moose have been spotted.
Shot Opportunity
Bearpaw Outfitters can’t guarantee success, quantity, or the size of animals that are seen on wild hunts, but they will work hard to provide you the best hunt possible. Shot opportunity has been 100% nearly every year on the moose hunts. Most rifle shots have ranged from 100 to 200 yards, archery shots range from 10 to 50 yards.

Additional Game

Idaho has many great hunting opportunities. Deer, elk, and cougar tags are available over the counter with no draw needed. You can combine an archery elk and deer hunt with your moose hunt in September; rifle mule deer in October; rifle bull elk in October, rifle cow elk in late October or early November, or a cougar hunt in mid November. If you finish moose hunting early there are forest grouse and coyotes in the mountains and the local streams and reservoirs offer exciting trout fishing.

Licenses & Hunter Ed

Moose Tags are available through a draw system with high odds of drawing a Shiras Moose tag. Some areas in Idaho have a 100% draw rate but if you want to hunt with Bearpaw Outfitters you need to apply in Southeast Idaho. The draw rate is usually from 20% to 30% for bulls and 80% to 100% for cows, which is higher than draw rates for Shiras Moose in most any other state.

Applications must be made during April. It is recommended that you call or email Bearpaw Outfitters and get on their mailing list. They will advise you when it is time to apply and how to apply. The total cost for a non-resident to apply is about $1900. About $1750 is refunded back to you by Idaho F&G if you're not drawn.

Guaranteed tags are sold over the counter for mule deer, elk, cougar, and small game. Hunters born after Jan 1, 1975 are required to have Hunter Education.

Guiding Options

Bearpaw Outfitters offer 1x1 or 2x1 Guided moose hunts. Bearpaw Outfitters do not recommend unguided hunts for moose. Trophy moose can be hard to find and are tough to pack out of rugged country without stock.

Accommodations & Meals

Mountain Lodge: Indoor lodging in the mountains with meals and lounging in the dining room and common areas of the lodge. There are rooms for 12 hunters with a jetted tub in every room and it’s close to the hunting area.

Guided Tent Camp: There are usually 6 to 10 hunters in the camp which is accessible using 4x4 autos. Camp Includes: tents, camp gear, portable toilet, kitchen area, water, with meals and services provided by Bearpaw.

Motel “Town Hunts”: Stay in town near restaurants and shopping. The motel is only 10 to 40 miles from most hunt areas. Bearpaw Outfitters will discount $70 per hunt day off your hunt fee for your room and meals. Hunters then pay for their choice of room and meals. Guide will pick up and return guided hunters to their room each day.

Horses / ATV’s

Guided hunters may request horses or an ATV for their hunt in advance for an additional $400 per hunter.

What’s Not Included

Meat processing, taxidermy, licenses, gratuities, state sales tax, and any other items not listed as being included. Remember to bring your personal gear and sleeping bag if camping.

Travel and Itinerary

Driving directions to our Southeast Idaho location will be provided. If you are flying into the Salt Lake City Airport you can get a rental car and it’s only about a 3 hour drive from SLC to meet Bearpaw Outfitters.

Plan to arrive in camp the evening before your hunt begins. Plan to hunt the duration of your hunt if needed, and depart in the evening after your last day of hunting. Most hunters reserve a motel room near the butcher shop for their last evening so they can clean up that evening and pick up their meat from the butcher shop in the morning before departing for home.

Booking a Hunt

Please call or email Bearpaw Outfitters with any questions you may have. Ask for a reference list and speak with some past hunters. Then use the Hunt Application or call to reserve your moose hunt. Bearpaw Outfitters look forward to providing you with an exciting and memorable moose hunting experience.
